Eddie Ayres learnt viola as a child in England, studying in Berlin and London before playing for eight years with the Hong Kong Philharmonic. As Emma Ayres, she presented a long-running program on ABC Classic FM. What the devoted audience didn’t see was Eddie’s daily struggle to live within a woman’s body. In 2016, Eddie accepted a position at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music. Amid the chaos and unpredictability of life in war-savaged Kabul, Eddie realised he had to accept his future and returned to Australia to begin transitioning from female to male.
