The Varuna Alumni Association


The Varuna Alumni is a vibrant and creative community of Australian writers.

If you have received a Varuna Fellowship or other awarded residency, you are invited to be part of the Varuna Alumni. Joining the Alumni means you will:

Belong to an exclusive group of Australian writers who have, over the years, all been selected via Varuna's highly competitive fellowship process.
Contribute to Varuna and the future of Australian writing. Your membership contribution enables us to maintain the Varuna house and gardens and run our fellowship programs.
Save on Varuna program application fees. Each calendar year, you're able to waive the application fee (up to $65) for one Varuna program.
Receive discounts of $315 per week on Varuna residencies, as well as preferential booking status.
Connect with our national network of writers and illustrators. As an Alumni, you can post your profile onto the Varuna website, and we will post updates on your work and achievements through our newsletters and social media network.
Receive our alumni newsletter. Our newsletter keeps you up to date with literary events, fellowship programs, competitions and latest publications from fellow Alumni.
Be eligible to apply for an international residential fellowship. Each year, two Alumni members will be selected through an Expression of Interest application process to receive a writing residency at either the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig, Ireland or Cove Park, Scotland. Only Alumni members are eligible to apply for this opportunity, with the successful recipient receiving return flights and up to four weeks' accommodation, meals and writing time in Ireland or Scotland.


Annual Alumni Membership

Annual Alumni membership is $110 (GST free).

Additional donations are always welcome and are tax deductible.


Who is eligible?

Writers who have been recipients of a Varuna Residential Fellowship, Publisher Introduction Program or another Varuna Award Program are invited to join the Varuna Alumni. The Board may also invite individuals who have made a significant contribution to Varuna to join the Alumni. Membership period

Membership is from January or July for 12 months. Application in the first 6 months of the year will be financial until December (January-December cycle). Fees received after July 1 will be financial until June 30 in the following year (July-June cycle).


Alumni Membership Applications & Renewals

New memberships: You can download and complete a Varuna Alumni Application Form (pdf). Post form with payment to: Varuna The National Writers' House, 141 Cascade St, Katoomba NSW 2780.

Renewals (January 2019 to December 2019 cycle): Click HERE for the online renewal procedure. We offer an early-bird rate of $99 if you renew by 30 November, 2018 (this membership is tax-deductible if you currently earn any part of your living from writing or editing).
