Congratulations to Heather Rose

Heather Rose, winner of the Eleanor Dark Fellowship in 2006 for her novel The River Wife, has been shortlisted for The Stella Prize and the Australian Literary Society Medal for her novel The Museum of Modern Love.

Heather and her co-writer, Danielle Wood, also write under the pen-name Angelica Banks. Their children's series for primary age readers has been published internationally and two have been shortlisted for the Aurealis Awards for Best Children's Novel in 2015 and 2016. Heather has worked on many of these novels at Varuna across several residences.

Quote: "Varuna has given me the nourishment of solitude where my writing was the most important thing I had to do each day. It was the only way I was able to have any periods of protracted working time to ponder, reflect, read, ramble, ruminate and write without the intervention of family life, business life or the myriad demands mothers of three children experience. For 2017 to arrive with The Stella Prize and The ALS Medal nominations has been remarkable and thrilling. I want to pay tribute to everyone who makes Varuna possible. And to the wonderful fellow writers with whom I have shared Sheila's cooking, good wine, the fireside and the walking trails. Those friendships and conversations have given me beautiful connections that have endured across all our novels as they have emerged throughout the years. The Varuna experiences have been pivotal in helping me feel that my work was of worth."
