The Eleanor Dark Foundation is a not for profit organization that provides - at Varuna - a special environment dedicated to Australian literature

By making a bequest to The Eleanor Dark Foundation you are helping sustain, nurture and develop Australian literature and Australian writers as they develop their work, find their personal voice and their pathway to publication.

Writing is a long and personal journey, Unlike many arts disciplines the final output or production of the work may take years of continuous review and revision.

Varuna's funding from the NSW Ministry for the Arts and the Australia Council for the Arts comprises less than 50% of the income we need to provides services to writers and maintain Varuna as a viable entity.

There are many different types of bequests you can make to help The Eleanor Dark Foundation.

Your Will is a very important legal document and needs professional attention. Seek the expert advice of a solicitor or trustee company when making or updating your Will and be satisfied your affairs are in order.

If you do not have a will then it's a simple matter of determining the style and type of bequest you wish to make and including it in your will.

If you already have a will then you can make and attachment to your will called a Codicil. A codicil does not change major parts of your will.

After deciding on the type of bequest that you want to make, ask your solicitor to draft the appropriate clause for your will or to attach it as a codicil.

Consider making your family part of the important decision about your bequest. Talk to them about getting to know us, what we do, and why you want to do this. Then simply record your wishes in your will. One day, your family will help decide how your gift to is actually used - making it more meaningful to everyone.

To support The Eleanor Dark Foundation after your lifetime your bequest must use the following wording:

"I bequeath …..(description type of bequest)….to The Eleanor Dark Foundation Ltd., for the general purposes of the Eleanor Dark Foundation Ltd., 141 Cascade St., Katoomba NSW 2780, and declare the signature of the Chairman of the said Foundation to be sufficient for my trustees"

In addition to any of the above, if the bequest is in the form of a trust or endowment, the following wording should be included:

"Recognizing that at sometime in the future it may be found that the income from the trust or endowed fund cannot be usefully applied for the expressed purpose, then the income and capital may be used for any other related purpose approved by the Board of Varuna which is within the general aims and objectives of the Varuna keeping in mind the original wishes of the donor."

Residual Bequests - you bequeath to The Eleanor Dark Foundation what is left of your estate after you provide for family, friends and any other specific bequests. Percentage bequest - you specify the percentage of your estate that you wish to go to The Eleanor Dark Foundation. This does not have to be a specific cash amount. Trust fund - you set up a trust in your will that allows your family to use the income derived from your estate while they are alive. The capital from the trust fund will go to The Eleanor Dark Foundation on their death. Endowment Bequest - you set up a trust fund and the interest from the fund is directed straight to The Eleanor Dark Foundation.
