Masterclass Equity Scholarships
Varuna’s curated program of online writing courses and masterclasses helps writers develop their craft, finish their project, and build meaningful connections and networks. Our skilled and experienced facilitators receive glowing feedback from participants, who benefit from writing exercises, feedback sessions, inspiration and mentorship.
As Australia’s National Writers’ House, we know how important it is that writers be surrounded by peers who will support and extend them. For this reason, these online writing programs are by application only and limited to just eight participants.
In 2026, we are proud to announce a new Equity Scholarship program which will fund up to 10 places across our writing courses, for writers for whom the cost of participation would be prohibitive.
Applications close: 5pm (AEDT) Tuesday 10 February 2026.
Places: Up to 10 fully-funded scholarships will be offered.
Varuna’s Masterclass Equity Scholarships are for writers for whom the cost of a course or masterclass would be prohibitive. This may include those who are unemployed or under-employed, such as casual, part-time or low-income work, or those who are on the Disability Support Pension, Aged Pension, or have a Healthcare card. If you do not meet these specific circumstances but are facing financial hardship for another reason, you may also apply.
In 2026, our Equity Scholarship program will offer up to 10 fully funded places.

For timing reasons, some of our Masterclasses starting early in the year are not eligible. We hope to offer these in future years.
How to Apply
To apply for an Equity Scholarship, we ask that you complete a short form with your details, bio, and a sample of your work. On this form, you will be asked to select up to three programs. If you are offered a scholarship, we can’t guarantee that you will be offered your first preference, but we will endeavour to offer you one of your preferences.
Writers will be offered Equity Scholarships based on the creative potential of their work, commitment to craft and their openness to collaborating with peers. All scholarship recipients must satisfy the eligibility requirements, including holding Australian Citizenship.
Applications close at 5pm on Tuesday 10 February 2026. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission by the end of March 2026.
