FAQ 

 How much is the application fee for the program?

There are no application fees for this program.

If I am successful, are there any fees for participating in the program?

Your fellowship includes economy flights from your nearest capital city to Shanghai, travel and medical insurance, accommodation for two months in Shanghai, a stipend of $600 per week, and a modest per diem allowance for food. Any other visa or travel expenses will be your responsibility.

Am I required to take my fellowship at a specific time of year?

Yes. The fellowship will take place from 1 September 2025 until 31 October 2025. It is not possible to request that your fellowship is for a shorter time.

When will I be notified regarding the outcome?

You will be notified of the outcome of your submission by email, and the fellowship recipients will be announced on our website in July 2024.

I’ve missed the deadline. Can I still submit an application?

No. Unfortunately no applications will be accepted after the deadline date.

Is there a word limit for my submission?

Yes, the word limit is 1,000 words.

Who is eligible to apply?

You need to be an Australian citizen or have a permanent residency visa and be over 18 years old. You also need to be a member of Varuna’s alumni, or be a staff member, student of alumni member of Western Sydney University.

My project has illustrations eg children's book or graphic novel. Is that permissable?

Yes.

Do I need to be able to speak Cantonese or Mandarin?

No. The organisers of this program speak English and a translator will be provided for public events.

What is the accommodation like?

You will be staying in a simple one-roomed studio apartment in central Shanghai. You will have your own bathroom and shower facilities, and shared laundry.

Does my writing project need to be about Shanghai or about Chinese culture in some way?

No. When selecting the fellowship recipient for this program, we are interested in knowing why a residency in Shanghai might be helpful for your work. However, we do not expect that your subject matter is directly related.
